The Biggest Hurdle to A Successful Speaking Business
My business is about using public speaking to attract more clients and make more money. When I talk with service-based entrepreneurs about it, they agree that it’s a good idea, but then their self-doubt kicks in. Their inner critic takes over and they begin to wonder, “Why would someone want to listen to me?” or “Am I really good enough to be on stage in front of my perfect target market?”
What do you need to be a powerful speaker?
- Expertise
- A message people need to hear
- A clear understanding who you are and what you have to offer
If you have these three things but don’t believe that you are the right person to deliver your message, the rest doesn’t matter. Your audience will sense that you are unsure of the value you bring.
Our mindset is the first (and often largest) hurdle most of us have to overcome.
Further, your mindset (your beliefs, values, thoughts, what you say to yourself on a daily basis) drives your behavior (the actions you take) which drives your results (outcomes).
How to Change Your Mindset
So how do you do that? How do you develop the mindset to “wow” your audience and be powerful on the stage?
1. Ask Yourself Questions
One of the best ways to retrain our brains is by having some self-talk Q&A. These are the questions I give my clients to answer:
- What self-limiting beliefs am I willing to let go of… to become a really powerful speaker?
- Where am I in my own way, and what am I willing to do about it?
- What investment of time, energy, and resources am I willing to make to learn the art and the craft of speaking so that I can build my confidence, and get good—really, really good?
2. A Vision Of You
Create a picture in your mind of who and how you want to be on stage. Picture yourself making an offer to your audience which intrigues them and makes them want to work with you beyond the speech. See the excitement your audience has when they stand in line to work with you. Visualize it. Marinate in it. Feel it. Be it.
3. Speak The Truth
Do you want to be a powerful speaker? Then declare out loud, “I am a speaker and I will change people’s lives with my message.”
Do you want to exponentially increase your income? Then declare, “My speaking generates so many clients for me that I have to put many of them on a waiting list.”
4. Practice Daily
It takes time to retrain our brains. I encourage my clients to do steps 2 and 3 every day, sometimes multiple times throughout the day to help them replace their negative images/self-talk with something powerful and positive.
Will you give it a try? By focusing on your mindset first, you will become more powerful, more effective, and will impact more people with your message.
